Night Nesting Haven for Endangered Sea Turtles
Rekawa Beach, situated 10 km east of Tangalle, is one of the world’s most important nesting grounds for sea turtles. Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species (Green Turtle, Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, and Leatherback) visit Rekawa shorelines to lay their eggs year-round.
Managed by the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP), Rekawa provides ethical, non-intrusive night tours guided by trained local trackers.
What to Expect During a Night Tour
Guided Beach Walk: Accompanied by experienced wildlife rangers using special red spectrum flashlights that do not disorient turtles.
Egg Laying Witness: Quietly observe mother turtles digging nests, laying eggs, and returning safely to the ocean.
Hatchling Releases: Depending on timing, baby turtle hatchlings are safely guided into ocean waves.
Ethical Turtle Conservation
Observe wild sea turtles nesting on natural beaches guided by local environmental rangers without artificial white lights.
